Bristol’s Open Mic scene given a facelift
Well stocked cafe/bar The Blue Lagoon on Glos rd will be taken over by the Closet and the Plank, a new night set up and hosted up by Barry the Badger(BAdgertRAP) and Eleanor Clare(Discoco).
One of the strengths of Bristol’s music scene is that people are constantly stretching things eg. Artscare records nights at Mr Wolfs, 145Collective @ Junction, Wens nights at the Leftbank amongst a few. The existing open mic scene has room to develop and stretch itself even more…
We want to make an open mic that allows for much more than just man with guitar or even band rabble. We are hosting with a girl/boy (girl/badger!) format to make things more inviting to female performers (of which there are never enough).
It is a scratch night for all types of performance – we like to bring the bedroom producers out to the stage. We know from performing that it is hugely valuable to be able to try new ideas out in front of a live audience. We aim to allow people to transform the space in whatever way they need to.
We are looking for the new stuff- the excitement of the new. The stuff that happens sometimes just at that moment. We offer collaboration and support to performers to make the trickier things happen- props, stunts and even psychological manipulation.
The launch show (April 6th) has the theme of the sinister and desperate world of Missing Pets.
It is provoked by the latest and greatest missing pet, the Baltez family’s pet labrador Simon. They went to the desperate measure of pouring their urine on lampposts to attract him back! Posters were everywhere.
It will involve a blend of featured performers (at least one from out of town each month) with open stage. We are encouraging people who want to perform to get in contact beforehand.

A visually explosive night in a venue which really has one of the best PA ‘s and sound engineers in Bristol. Finally both Andrew and I could really hear what we were doing. Barry the Badger in his improv bit manged to coax some lyrics about rats from the audience who were well in the mood for flexing their creative muscles.
So the 70s returned to Bristo with a bang- but not that cheesey crap – more the rock n roll theatre with political edge and eccentric desire circa 1976.
